U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist has announced a $499,638 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Eckerd College for its work to reduce ocean pollution from single-use plastics.
The funding is a part of the EPA’s Gulf of Mexico Program. The college plans to create a mobile app with the funds to help Pinellas County residents digitally track their single-use plastic consumption. The goal of the app is to encourage consumers to reduce their plastic footprint.
“The students and faculty of Eckerd College have dedicated themselves to ending the scourge of plastic pollution in our community,” Crist said.
