Pinellas County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to revoke previous approval for funding for a Black radio station in St. Petersburg.
The board had previously approved $36,800 for equipment and computers for WBPU 96.3 FM, or Black Power 96. But Commissioner Chris Latvala later raised concerns the funding went to the African People’s Education and Defense Fund, a nonprofit with ties to the controversial Uhuru group.
The station broadcasts from the group’s headquarters in St. Pete where FBI agents raided last year amid allegations the group had ties to a Russian national accused of spreading pro-Russia propaganda and contributing to election interference.
