Rays pitcher Shane Baz, a promising piece of the team’s future, will have Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2023 season.
Baz was shut down in July, but doctors recommended rest over surgery. After a throwing session Saturday, though, the decision was made to proceed with the operation.
The Rays also announced that Brandon Lowe will not return this season because of back problems.
Lowe, who led the club last year with 39 home runs, has battled injuries most of this season. He was hit on the elbow in late August. He had three stays on the injured list.
