Winner: USF St. Pete. The school received a $15 million state grant to plan and begin construction on a $15 million ocean science center.
When completed, the Florida Flood Hub for Applied Research and Innovation will allow students to earn STEM degrees while researching ways to mitigate flooding throughout the state.
Loser: Derek Jeter’s old house. The 21,796-square-foot, 7-bedroom, 16-bathroom house the Hall of Fame shortstop built in 2011 is headed for the wrecking ball, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Jeter sold the waterfront landmark for $22.5 million last year.
There’s no immediate word on what will replace the structure.
