Former legislator Wengay Newton is challenging incumbent state Rep. Michele Rayner for the House District 62 seat, which covers South St. Petersburg.
While the pair are considered the frontrunners in the race, a third Democrat, Jesse Philippe, is also running.
Rayner succeeded Newton in the 2020 election, becoming first openly gay woman of color elected to the Florida Legislature.
The Democratic nominee will face Republican Jeremy Brown in the November General Election. However, the Brown may struggle to turn the deep-blue district, which saw 72% support for President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, and only 27% for Donald Trump.
