The Rays celebrated the return of shortstop Wander Franco on Sunday, nearly a month after he went on the injured list.
“It’s a big boost,” Rays pitcher Shane Baz said.
Franco had tried playing through an injured right quadriceps muscle, but Manager Kevin Cash said that the only answer was to shut him down. Franco started the season hot, hitting .331, but while he battled the injury, he hit .150 in his last 17 games before going on the injured list.
The Rays were 11-12 during Franco’s absence and lost an additional 5-and-a-half games in the American League East standings.
