A dump near Largo Central Park may get an extreme makeover.

Porter Development this week unveiled a plan to turn the 87.9-acre landfill, situated east of the Largo Public Library, into a sports tourism destination.

The developer envisions a complex featuring a 170,000 square-foot recreation center, 60,000 square feet of indoor pickleball courts, scads of outdoor pickleball courts, eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts, a 10-acre public lagoon and an open floor space for activities such as cheer or dance practices.

“At maturity, we expect about $16 million in new, direct spending into the community,” development adviser Dan Morton said.
