St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch said, “St. Pete is back in the game!” to keep the Tampa Bay Rays in the Sunshine City, declaring on Twitter, “we have re-engaged with urgency to keep baseball in the Sunshine City.”
That declaration followed a meeting with Pinellas County officials and the Rays. The city will study if it’s feasible to build a stadium on the site of Albert Whitted Airport.
Rays President Brian Auld said the team is “encouraged by (Welch’s) spirit of collaboration, and look forward to working alongside him.”
Tampa’s Ybor City is also a potential spot for the stadium.
