St. Petersburg native is runner-up at Australian Open

St. Petersburg’s Danielle Collins fell just short of winning her first major tennis championship, falling 7-2 to Australian Ash Barty in the women’s final at the Australian Open.

Barty is now the world’s top-ranked player.

Collins, a 50-1 long-shot when the event began, had a 5-1 lead in the second set but could not hold on. Collins was a two-time NCAA singles champion at the University of Virginia.

“It’s not easy going out and playing someone pretty much on their home court in the finals of a major, but this is what you live for in sports, right?” Collins said.
