Rachel Balkovec is expected to make history when the New York Yankees announce her promotion to manage the minor-league Tampa Tarpons, The Associated Press reported Monday. She will become the first woman to manage a team affiliated with Major League Baseball.
Sources told The Associated Press of the news Sunday night on condition of anonymity because the club had not yet announced the promotion.
Balkovec was hired by the Yankees in 2019 as a hitting coach in the organization’s minor-league system. Her first pro-ball position was for the St. Louis Cardinals asa minor league strength and conditioning coach in 2012.
