Julio Lugo, who played parts of four seasons of baseball in Tampa Bay when the team was known as the Devil Rays, died of an apparent heart attack in the Dominican Republic on Monday.
He was 45, set to turn 46 Tuesday.
He signed with the Devil Rays as a free agent in 2003 and was a mainstay at shortstop until he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at midseason in 2006. Lugo played for seven teams in a 12-year career and was with Boston when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2007.
He retired after the 2011 season.
