Nadine Smith, co-founder and executive director of Equality Florida, is about to get St. Petersburg’s highest civilian honor.
The journalist-turned-activist will get the key to the city from Mayor Rick Kriseman during a special ceremony at the Oct. 14 City Council meeting.
Smith helped found Equality Florida in 1997 to combat the passing of the Defense of Marriage Act, a Florida statute that declared only marriages between a man and a woman would be recognized. In a news release, Kriseman called Smith a trailblazer and leading voice in the LGBT community.
The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.
