With their 7-0 win over Houston on Wednesday, the Rays accomplished two important things.
First, the victory ensured the Rays will finish the regular season with the American League’s best record. That gives them home-field advantage throughout the A.L. playoffs.
Second, it was their 98th win this season, breaking the franchise record of 97 set in 2008.
The Rays won’t know until next Tuesday who their first-round playoff opponent will be. The two non-division-winning teams with the best records meet in a one-game playoff to see who gets the Rays.
The best-of-five division series at Tropicana Field opens on Oct. 7.
