The Florida LGBTQ Democratic Caucus is backing former Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch in the St. Petersburg mayoral race, it announced Thursday.
The statewide caucus has chapters throughout Florida, including the Stonewall Democrats of Pinellas County. The Florida LGBTQ Democratic Caucus echoed endorsements from the local chapter after reviewing candidates on the municipal election ballot.
Welch has a history in championing LGBTQ-centered issues. In 2008, he motioned to add sexual orientation to the list of protections under the county’s human rights ordinance.
The caucus also endorsed City Council candidates Copley Gerdes, Clifford Hobbs III, Richie Floyd and Mhariel Summers.
