Muslim inmate sues Pinellas deputy for denying religious meal request

by The 100 Companies

A Pinellas County inmate is suing a detention deputy for denying his freedom of religion and cruel and unusual punishment.

Edward Cecil Craig II, a practicing Muslim, says he complained to a detention deputy, identified only by his last name, Stansfield, that portions of his meal were “incorrect” for the Ramadan holiday in April. According to the lawsuit filed on June 17, Stansfield denied his request, snatched his food container and placed Craig in handcuffs.

Craig is being held for felony petit theft. Craig seeks $10,000 for an injury to his right arm and $300,000 for violating his constitutional rights.
